In a meeting chaired by University of Engineering & Technology Lahore Vice Chancellor Dr. Fazal Ahmed Khalid, UET Stadium has been renamed after renowned religious scholar and notable UET alumnus Junaid Jamshed. The stadium has been labeled now as “Junaid Jamshed Sports Stadium“. This was done in recognition of his melodious voice in the form of patriotic national songs, and his efforts in the spread of message of Islam & peace.
Junaid Jamshed is the son of Pakistan Air Force Group Captain (retired) Jamshed Akber Khan. He wanted to join Pakistan Air Force but could not do so because of weak eye sight. He then enrolled in Mechanical Engineering at UET, Lahore. He graduated in the year 1990. Later on, he also had a short lived career in PAF as a civil contractor.
His famous musical band “vital signs” was started in the year 1986, he first gained nationwide as well as international recognition as group ‘Vital Signs’ vocalist in 1987 with the album that included ‘Dil Dil Pakistan’, and ‘Tum Mil Gaye’ while he was still a student at UET Lahore at that time. Then people witnessed a revolutionary change in his life and career as he said good bye to music for ever and opened his heart and mind solely for Islam. He then emerged again with his melodious voice in the form of Naat khwaan.
Junaid Jamshed was flying to Islamabad from Chitral alongwith his wife on PIA Flight 661, which got crashed near Haveliaan , KPK on 7th December 2016. May his soul rest in eternal peace!
